Do you know what’s in your makeup bag? Lately we’ve been talking about looking at the ingredients in your food. Today we’re going to shift gears and talk about looking at the ingredients in your personal care products. Have you ever taken a moment to flip over your soap, lotion or makeup to see what the ingredients are? Chances are, you won’t know how to pronounce half of them! Most personal care products on the shelves at stores contain toxic ingredients including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins and hormone disrupters. Are cosmetic products approved by the FDA before they go on the market? NO. Do ingredients that can be toxic or allergenic need to be listed on the ingredient label? NO. American families assume personal care products on the market today have been tested by the federal government. Unfortunately, the personal care products industry remains largely unregulated. The FDA does not even require safety testing of ingredients in personal care products before they are used. (Source: Environmental Working Group) Have you heard of the Environmental Working Group? This non-profit, non-partisan organization has set out to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment by providing reports, online databases and mobile apps to educate and empower us as consumers to make decisions about the products we buy and the companies we support. What are we to do? As a first step to cleaning up your products, check out EWG’s Skin Deep online database or Healthy Living mobile app to scan each of your products and see how they rate. The next step is to replace what you no longer deem acceptable. Start seeking out beauty products that do not contain these harmful ingredients or make your own!
