Meet the Women Behind DC Wellness

Dr. Rachel Hovey

chiropractor + owner

For my entire life, I knew that God designed me to help people. During my undergrad education at Hamline University, I was planning on becoming a Physical Therapist (PT) after I finished my degrees in Biology and Psychology. However, my life changed direction when I was injured as a collegiate athlete and my coach recommended that I see a chiropractor. From that point on, I was blown away by the world of chiropractic care. Just a couple of months before I was supposed to start PT school, I changed at the last minute and enrolled at Northwestern Health Sciences University for my Doctorate of Chiropractic instead!

Having been a 3-sport collegiate athlete (competing in Cross Country, as well as Indoor and Outdoor Track), I originally chose to emphasize in treating professional athletes at the start of chiropractic school. However, my life was changed when, by chance, I was placed as an intern at DC Wellness Center! It was here that I learned what it meant to truly help individuals, not just professional athletes. I understand that each person has their own journey, and I pride myself on listening to everyone’s story to help them reach their wellness goals.

Though I have been a chiropractor for several years now, I am constantly learning and growing through continuing education to provide the best care possible for our patients. I am Webster certified and I have become a specialist in pediatric and pregnancy chiropractic through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), Epic Pediatrics and the Pediatric Experience. My passion is to help families live a lifestyle of wholeness and health, free of medications and surgeries.

I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart, Zach, since 2014. We had our son, ZJ, in 2017 and our daughter, Palmer, in 2021.We also have a red Labrador named Jaxon!

Dr. Sonia Schwert

chiropractor

I was born in Malaysia and spent the first 18 years of my life living and doing my schooling between Malaysia and Singapore. I always knew that I wanted a career in the healthcare profession. Even in high school, I had a strong interest in science and a passion for helping others. However, it wasn’t until my father experienced a severe tailbone injury, causing excruciating pain for him, that I was introduced to the world of chiropractic care. After seeing tremendous improvement in his symptoms through chiropractic adjustments, I decided to move to the United States at the age of 18 to pursue my chiropractic education.

I attended Northwestern Health Sciences University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Biology, as well as my Doctorate of Chiropractic. Over the course of my education, I discovered that my true passion lies in treating pregnant women, as well as infants and children. For this reason, I pursued further education in perinatal care and have received my Webster certification and continue to take courses through the ICPA and Pediatric Experience. I love the idea of being able to treat the body through a natural and holistic approach while incorporating the body’s innate intelligence and ability to restore balance.

In 2019, I married my college biology lab partner, Steven, and we welcomed our first son, Jordan, in 2020. We also have 2 dogs: Luna and Ranger! In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, cooking, and exercising.

Dr. Jen Sweeney

chiropractor

While growing up in Duluth, I always thought chiropractic care was just to treat back pain. I watched my dad, barely able to walk due to extreme back pain, be up walking and moving around effortlessly after a visit to the local chiropractor.

My understanding of chiropractic care grew tremendously during an internship while I completed my undergraduate degree for Exercise Science at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. It was there that I learned about the power of chiropractic care. My eyes were opened to the possibilities of greater health and wellness, as well as the prevention of disease, through chiropractic adjustments. This inspired me to enroll at Northwestern Health Sciences University to pursue a career as a chiropractor. After graduation, I began my career at DC Wellness and fell in love with helping the people of Maple Grove.

My chiropractic career quickly became a passion for helping and inspiring entire families (including children and pregnant women) to live a life full of health and vitality. Being a continual learner, I have advanced training in pediatric and pregnancy chiropractic and am Webster certified. I have also taken several courses through the ICPA and the Pediatric experience to continue my education and better serve our patients. I believe that the human body is capable of amazing things and will naturally heal when it is supported in the right way.

My husband, Joe, and I have 3 beautiful children: Julia, Kate, and Leo. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family at our cabin, running, and traveling!

Deb Rabe

care advocate

Prior to working at DC Wellness, I had been a patient here for 6 years. Our doctors have taught me the importance of health and wellness through chiropractic care. When the opportunity to work at this amazing clinic came open, I was extremely excited! I have been working in the healthcare field for 35 years now and I love every opportunity I get to meet new people and help them achieve their goals!

I have 3 grown children and 7 grandchildren, and I love spending time with all of them in any way I can! I enjoy how different they all are and love seeing the world through their eyes. My husband and I enjoy traveling, entertaining, and experiencing life to the fullest.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and helping however I can with your wellness journey!

Kendra Simmer

clinic coordinator

I am from Alaska (yes, born and raised) and, for some reason, chose to go to college in Minnesota! While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at Bethel University, I met my husband.

In June of 2021, I married Colton, Dr. Rachel’s cousin! Not only did this finally introduce me to this amazing woman, but it also opened my eyes to the world of chiropractic! I am now a certified and licensed Athletic Trainer and, despite having never seen a chiropractor, I quickly learned that chiropractic care and athletic training can go hand in hand.

While working at DCWC full time, I also have a part time job with Twin Cities Orthopedics covering high school sporting events!

I have gained a whole new outlook on the way our bodies function as well as the importance of chiropractic care, not only for pain but also for everyday health and long-term wellness. I have a growing passion for chiropractic, I love people (adults, kids, and babies) and I cannot wait to get to meet and help all of you who come through our doors!
